ALBANY, N.Y. -- Children born with congenital heart defects come together at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Sunday.

Families from all over the Capital Region gathered to meet other families whose children had the same heart defect.

The meeting gives kids the opportunity to learn about nature by watching demonstrations and playing with different exhibits. The children also had the chance to reconnect with the doctors who performed surgery on them.

Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Dr. Neil Devejian said, "I think it's great for the kids to get together with other kids who have gone through it, for their families to get with other families. Obviously, it's the whole family going through it, when a kid has a significant heart defect. So, it's just a great means of support."

According to the American Heart Association, nine of every 1,000 babies are born with a congenital heart defect.
