NISKAYUNA, N.Y. -- Leaders at the Niskayuna Central School District are talking about closing a school to help bridge a multi-million dollar budget gap.

At their board meeting, NCSD's superintendent discussed cuts to programs and possibly closing Van Antwerp Middle School or a yet-to-be-named elementary school to help balance their 2013-2014 budget.

School leaders say taxes would have to go up more than 11 percent to keep the school district running as is.

Superintendent Susan Kay Salvaggio says cuts could happen, in the form of a PE teacher, language teacher and freshman sports. That, coupled with the closure of a school, could save up to a million dollars.

Salvaggio said, "Our goal in all of this is to find the balance we can find. Between reduction and in increase of tax levies that will help us sustain programs for children,”

“And you encourage parents to participate[ate in the process?” one person asked.

“Absolutely," Salvaggio said.

Niskayuna schools face a $6 million budget gap for the 2013-2014 budget.

Leaders say they've gotten less state aid this year than in years past.

Right now, any potential cuts or closures are just proposals.The superintendent says she's getting ideas and input from parents and the community before making any concrete decisions.
