BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – Exactly seven months after authorities say she murdered her boyfriend in cold blood, Joey Paul was arraigned on three charges, including second degree murder. Upon entering Saratoga County Court, the 29-year-old denied responsibility.

“I'm innocent, it was a mistake," Paul replied when questioned by reporters. “It was an accident.”

Paul, who also faces second degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon charges, is accused of shooting and killing her 28-year-old boyfriend, Matthew Furlani, in their Schuylerville apartment July 1st.

"Miss Paul is innocent,” said Frederick Rench, Ms. Paul’s attorney. “An incident took place, she was a part of the incident, speaking beyond that would be inappropriate but the truth is going to come out at trial."

Outside of the courtroom, Paul's sister, Catina Archambeault-Stewart, said both Paul and Furlani were battling addiction to heroin and pills and had a violent relationship. Archambeault-Stewart, who declined to be interviewed on-camera, added family members feared one would end up dead if the two stayed together.

Rench would not comment on his client’s alleged drug use.

"I don't think that's particularly relevant,” Rench said. “She's charged here with some serious crimes and she's guilty of none of them, the incidents that took place in the house were completely accidental."

Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy was unavailable for comment Friday.

Paul remains in custody at the Saratoga County Jail without bail. No future court date has been set.
