UNITED STATES -- If you noticed a lot of people around you wearing red, it is not a coincidence. National Wear Red Day is an effort to raise awareness about heart disease in women.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, but many don't recognize the symptoms. Instead of the typical chest pain that men experience, women with heart disease often experience symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or pain in the back or jaw.

Health experts say proper diet and exercise can help prevent heart disease. And, there are other things women can do to keep their hearts healthy.

"And really just improve the quality of our life. Obviously not smoking, knowing some of your important numbers like your cholesterol and your blood sugar, are all ways that women can learn to really take care of their bodies and be their best advocate," said Gina Chapman, American Heart Association Director.

The Go Red Day campaign has been held on February 1st for the past ten years.
