ALBANY, N.Y. -- Bright red is beaming through the heart of the Capital Region as area businesses aim to bring awareness to women's heart health.

Local business people flipped a switch at the TU Center Thursday, lighting the outside of the arena red. More than a dozen area businesses are also glowing red, all just in time for "National Wear Red Day" on Friday. It's all meant to remind people about the seriousness of heart disease, the nation's number of killer of women.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy said most people aren't aware of its severity.

"Women die from heart disease every minute. Every minute. Think about that. It's the number one health threat and most people don't even know it," McCoy said.

"The common idea is I'll take care of this tomorrow. That's killing us faster than we can get control of," said Kathy Lanni, American Heart Association Board Member.

"National Wear Red Day" officially kicks of National Heart Month.

The Times Union will be glowing red throughout February.
