SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- No jurors were selected on the first day of jury selection in the trial of James Wells, the man accused of killing a Schenectady teen.
Police say Wells shot and killed 15-year-old Eddie Stanley in June 2011. Police were called to 730 Bridge Street for a call of shots fired, and they say they found Stanley there with five gunshot wounds. He was taken to Ellis Hospital, where he later died.
Wells was arrested a month later and indicted last January.
Court papers show a fight broke out between the victim and the suspect. Police say that fight escalated and Wells pulled out the gun and shot Stanley.
Wells is charged with second degree murder, weapons possession, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.
"The jury is going to hear evidence that my guy made him part of a gang, that they're fairly notorious. The jury is going to hear evidence of prior gun possessions. The jury is going to hear evidence of drug dealing, it's going to be very tough. And yet we believe that the facts and the only issue that matters here which is whether or not it was he that committed the murder in that time and place," said defense attorney Cheryl Coleman.
It's unclear on how many jurors were interviewed on the first day. Jury selection is expected to go into next week. The trial, itself, is expected to take three to four weeks.
