SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A community gathers on Sunday to celebrate the many contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The two-part event - put on by the Schenectady County Human Rights Commission - consisted of a rally at Veterans Park followed by a Program and Keynote at the First United Methodist Church on State Street. The rally featured a play back of King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Organizers say their hope is for everyone to know the significance of the speech. They say they also hope the speech will continue to inspire lawmakers and citizens to continue to act upon King's dream.

Human Rights Commission Chair Angelicia Morris said, "Dr. King, in that speech, I Have a Dream, was his dream of seeing America coming together under one nation. Not under one color or religion or nationality, but under one America."

UAlbany professor Dr. Leonard Slade, Jr. was the keynote speaker. Slade is a civil rights scholar who actually worked with Dr. King on the civil rights movement.
