ALBANY, N.Y. -- More than $3 billion has been approved to build the new Tappan Zee Bridge. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has approved a $3.14 billion contract between the State Thruway Authority and Tappan Zee Constructors, the group selected to design the new bridge.

DiNapoli says replacing the aging bridge is vital to the state's economic prosperity, but adds his approval of the plan does not extend to potential toll increases on the span.

The state has been seeking $2.9 billion in loans from the federal government to pay for the new bridge.
