GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- Three local schools are getting federal help in conducting some safety drills. The State Department of Homeland Security visited the more than 800 faculty and staff members from Gloversville, Johnstown, and Wheelerville school districts.

The training put teachers and other school employees in different scenarios, giving them ideas methods for handling an active shooter situation. School officials say they also did some research before the training.

"We did some studies, and learned about some of the incidents that already occurred. From Columbine, to Arkansas to Newtown Connecticut. So what can we learn from those to make things safer," said Michael Vanyo, Gloversville ESD Superintendent.

"We suggested ways to keep themselves safe, how they can respond and react in those first seconds and minutes. That's the answer...they have to understand the simple things to do and hopefully that will be enough in those cases to keep them alive," said Rick Matthews, National Center for Security and Preparedness President.

Gloversville has also been working with consultants to review and revamp their district safety polices.
