PORT JERVIS, N.Y. --
The death of a woman found inside a Port Jervis house fire Tuesday is ruled a homicide by the Orange County medical examiner.

Port Jervis Police are now investigating the murder of Tyrochelle Haughton, 35. Authorities say she was beaten and stabbed to death.

Officials had initially labelled the fire, which started around 11 a.m. Tuesday on Mountain Avenue as suspicious.

According to police, when firefighters arrived on the scene they discovered Haughton dead inside the home.

Haughton's neighbors say they're shocked.

"It's kind of hard to understand that it happened. It doesn't really feel like it did happen," said Casey Schnoor, Port Jervis resident.

A 38-year-old man police have not yet identified - was able to escape from the burning home. There is no word on his relationship to the victim. He's currently in Westchester Medical Center receiving treatment for burns.
