SCHENCTADY, N.Y. -- Six new recruits were sworn in at City Hall on Monday. They range in age from 23 to 28. That brings the average age on the force to about 30.

It also included a female recruit, Sarah Waltersdorf, which brings the total number of women in the department to four.

New chief, Brian Kilcullen said they represent a new shift in strategy, one that will includes fostering a better relationship with city residents, and doing more with less after some budget cuts. He also said the strategy means more accountability in a department that's had to deal with discipline issues.

Even though they brought on six new officers, that still only brings the total to 146, which is down 20 from just two years ago.

These recruits are now off to the academy for six months, followed by three months of supervised field training before they get their badges later this year.
