POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The doors to Mahoney's Pub in Poughkeepsie are closed early New Year's Day. Only hours earlier, though, police say the popular restaurant and nightspot is anything but quiet when a New Year's Eve party turned violent. An early morning shooting sent one man to the hospital.
"The officers responding found a male shot. He had been shot inside the bar," said Detective Sergeant Matthew Clark.
The shooting victim according to police is now in stable condition.
According to police, the bar shooting wasn't the only shooting incident in the city to begin the New Year.
Police say in an unrelated shooting, a man was shot in the shoulder early Tuesday morning at the Tubman Terrace Housing Complex.
"At 4:09 a.m., officers responded to Vassar Brothers Hospital. They had a person walk in with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. That person was interviewed. He reports he was shot in the area of Tubman Terrace in the City of Poughkeepsie," Clark said.
Neither restaurant owners nor housing complex officials could be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, police are asking anyone with information on either shooting to contact them at 451-7577.
One local resident says 2013 isn't likely to be a healthy and prosperous new year if this kind of violence keeps up.
"Not the way to start the New Year at all," Lance Hardy said.
