NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Chief Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver II in the Connecticut school shooting says the case is one of the worst he's ever seen in nearly 30 years on the job.

All children and staff have been examined as of Saturday. The medical examiner says the suspect and his mother will be examined Sunday. He says all children and staff died from gunshot wounds and the deaths are being considered homicides.

A rifle has been confirmed as the primary weapon in the shooting.

Carver says he personally examined seven bodies and that all were shot more than once.

"Given what I deal with all the time, is this over the top? I've been at this for a third of a century and it's my sensibility and mine might not be the average man, but this is probably the worst I've seen, or the worst that I know any of my colleagues have seen," Carver said.

The suspect has not been officially identified. Police say no reports of altercations involving the possible suspect and the school have ever been filed and they're still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

Community trying to cope with tragedy

A day after the shooting, people around Newtown are still coping with the tragedy. Our Elaina Athans spoke to some in the community and joins us now with more.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Grief was felt throughout the nation and the Newtown community is mourning following the shooting.

People were out Saturday bringing flowers and expressing their condolences at the elementary school and other spots throughout the community. They're praying for the survivors and those affected by the senseless shooting that happened Friday.

As the Newtown community gathers to support one another, they are left with so many unanswered questions.

"They were five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Kids, why would someone do that? Why? What did they do to you that you had to do that? Why?" asked Danbury resident Joclyn Cardenas.

A community wide vigil will is planned for Sunday night at 7 p.m.

Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy spoke Saturday evening. He says he's at a loss to explain why the shooting happened and urged the community to come together to support each other.

“So what can we do?” Malloy asked. “As was no doubt the case last night, we can hug someone we love a little tighter. As has been happening since yesterday, we can show and share with each other the grief we feel for the children and adults who were killed and for their families and loved ones.”

Malloy also praised the adults who were in the school, saying that their actions saved numerous lives.
