ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. -- Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy has vetoed the proposed pawn shop law known as "Local Law G."

The proposed law has been the center of controversy among business owners. It would have required pawn shops to create an electronic registry of all the items a store receives as a means of recovering stolen goods that may be pawned. Shop owners would also have to report a seller's name, and would hold goods for a set length of time.

McCoy commended the legislators for bringing the issue to the forefront of public discussion, but said, "While the intention of Local Law G of 2012 is good, it would place an undue burden on businesses, causing a hardship to them and creating issues for law enforcement in collecting this information."
