MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- The Middletown School District has won a nearly $20 million grant as part of the US Department of Education's Race to the Top Program. About $400 million in awards was up for grabs to districts to propose plans to personalize student learning.

A few weeks ago, Middletown was named as one of 61 finalists in Race for the Top. Middletown was the only school district in New York to win and one of 16 winners in the federal competition.

Middletown's Superintendent now says he and educators have a lot of work to do, in a short amount of time.

"We have this huge project that we have to implement starting in January because this grant starts January 1st. So, we have a lot of work sitting in front of us for the next six months, just to get this program up and running for summer 2013," said Middletown Superintendent Ken Eastwood.

Eastwood says some plans include introducing a two-year kindergarten program for those not "kindergarten-ready" and buying roughly 5,000 tablets for kids to work from.
