Montgomery County Sheriff's office warns of phone scam

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a scam affecting local residents. They say some residents have received a phone call stating that if they do not provide a sum of money through Western Union then they will be arrested and put in jail.

According to deputies, if you have a caller ID the phone number will show as an “Emergency Call.” They say this is a scam that is done with a computer over the Internet, and want residents to know it is not your local law enforcement calling.

According to deputies, most of these victims have outstanding loans and the people calling are stating that a payment is required to satisfy a portion of it. Deputies are reminding the public to never wire or send money to anyone you don't know.

If you have been a victim of this scam, or have any questions, contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 673-2554.
