UNITED STATES -- It's that time of year again. People are stringing holiday lights on the tree and around the home. National Grid has a few tips to keep it safe and save on your energy bills.

The energy giant says the key to saving big this holiday is using LED lights. They are telling people that LED lights use 90 percent less electricity than traditional lights and are more durable. The bulbs use epoxy lenses, making them virtually indestructible.

The LED lights can also provide up to 100,000 hours of light and are safer because the lights stay cool.

Other tips include limiting the amount of time the lights are turned on, avoiding overcrowding of electrical circuits and to check for frayed wires or damaged sockets before decorating.
