Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign is short close to 700 volunteer hours in the North Country this season. Without the public's help, they say they may need to cancel some of the holiday traditions. Our Brooke Selby has more on the help they need.

NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. -- It's soon to be that time of year again: Hot cocoa, Christmas carols and jingle bells. For many, the Salvation Army is synonymous with the sound of bells ringing around town during the holiday season.

Glens Falls Salvation Army volunteer Steve Norsworthy said, "It’s like a four hour shift. You come in and volunteer. It feels great. I love it. I love giving back to the community the community. The community helps us, I think we ought to help the community out."

While this volunteer has helped the Army in Glens Falls for the past three years, he is one of a very few. One week into its holiday fundraising season and there's already a problem.

Major David Dean of the Greater Glens Falls Salvation Army said, “Had two days last week that I had no volunteers one day and one volunteer one day, so I need about 10 to 12 people per day per four hour shift.”

Since 1901, volunteers have helped raise the money they need to assist millions of people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The kettle campaign raises more than $140 million for the Salvation Army across the country each year.

Dean said, "Over the course of a year, believe it or not, it's actually about $8,000 that we can save by using volunteers."

So they need the public to stand up and help by donating their time and change to the cause.

Dean also said, "I have some people that do one day a week, I have people that do a couple of days. We are looking for clubs, groups and organizations. We still need hundreds of people to finish out the year."
