A man is behind bars Tuesday, accused of murdering a man in his apartment back in April 2010. Our Megan Cruz has the details.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- This is John Wakefield III, 36. Police say he murdered Brett Wentworth back in April 2010. The 41-year-old was found dead in his Wendell Avenue apartment.

"The police have been pursuing the case ever since the crime was committed and we've had some good breaks along the way," said Schenectady County Assistant District Attorney Peter Willis.

A grand jury indicted Wakefield Tuesday. He's charged with one count of first degree murder, two counts of second degree murder and two counts of robbery in the first.

Willis is staying tight-lipped about the details in the case, but he did say this: "They knew each other. It wasn't a random act, but the nature of the relationship is not something I want to get into at this point."

According to court papers, police believe Wakefield killed Wentworth after robbing him.

Willis says Wentworth's family helped put together pieces of this two year old puzzle.

"Their support of the police and our office has been very valuable and the information about their brother and son has been helpful in their investigation," he said.

Back in 2010, few leads left police at a loss. But now, those involved say they're confident they've got their guy.

"The evidence we've amassed we believe indicates he committed the crime," said Willis.

Wakefield, who's currently serving a sentence for second degree assault, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He's been sent back to state prison.

His next court appearance is February 1st.
