Veterans Day is a celebration to honor the country's veterans for their service and sacrifice. A special ceremony this morning is honoring those who have served in war, and those who are still fighting. Megan Cruz reports from the Brown School in Schenectady where the ceremony is taking place.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A Schenectady school held a ceremony to honor our Veterans, ahead of the holiday weekend. The Brown School hosted the ceremony on Friday morning.

An English teacher's son will be deployed to Afghanistan early next year. John and Karen McKenna were also in attendance. Their son was killed during his third tour of duty in Iraq in 2006. McKenna's father and educators both agree this was an important lesson for students.

"I think it's important for us to not only teach our children about their academic needs, but also about their civic needs, and service, and what better example than the service that our military do, and the families," said Patti Vitale, Head of School.

John McKenna added, "The whole idea of what we do, as people have asked me, is it to remember my son? No. What it is to do is to teach these young people about self-sacrifice, love of community, love of their fellow man, to be able to get out there and do something positive for their community."

The school also presented a $200 check to Blue Star Mothers, an group that has children serving our country.
